i just removed all the GNOME things from my system - im strictly XFCE now. But i noticed one thing..... now i have no archive manager! can someone tell me what package to install that i can get an archive manager?

Yep, that's right. File-roller depends on a hefty amount of gnome libs; bonobo/cairo/gnome2 etc.
You have to try find a simple python/script version?
After all, all the tools you need should be there; gzip, tar, zip and more.

using xubuntu in its own right has certain sacrifices...file-roller is one of them...just use the CLI commands.
