View Full Version : [SOLVED] Enabling nVidia drivers causes Jaunty to not boot

Greetings, hopefully someone can help me out. I have a desktop with dual GT 260 nVidia cards, and while the install of Ubuntu went fine, whenever I try to enable the nVidia restricted drivers upon reboot it hangs after the Checking battery state [OK]. The only way to get back to my desktop is to uninstall the nVidia drivers.

This is my current (read: working) xorg.conf file:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Driver "nv"
EndSection

I've tried adding the BusID entry with either card's ID, but that doesn't seem to be the issue either.

Any thoughts? 3 hours of googling hasn't helped me find an answer yet.

Change driver from "nv" to "nvidia" and see if that helps.

EDIT: Ok, re-install the driver and show us the changed Xorg.conf

Before reboot? Because if I reboot it then I won't be able to copy and paste it.

Here it is after installing the driver but before rebooting:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

Thanks for the help!

Seems fine to me. Try using nvidia-xconfig and see if that helps.

Ok, before reboot I get this, and it's probably expected:

WARNING: No Layout specified, constructing implicit layout section using screen
"Default Screen".

WARNING: Unable to find CorePointer in X configuration; attempting to add new
CorePointer section.

WARNING: The CorePointer device was not specified explicitly in the layout;
using the first mouse device.

WARNING: Unable to find CoreKeyboard in X configuration; attempting to add new
CoreKeyboard section.

WARNING: The CoreKeyboard device was not specified explicitly in the layout;
using the first keyboard device.

ERROR: Unable to write to directory '/etc/X11'.

I'll go ahead and reboot and if I have the same problem I'll Alt+F1 and see if it works from the command line. Will post shortly.

Oops, forgot sudo. With that added I get this:

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

WARNING: No Layout specified, constructing implicit layout section using screen
"Default Screen".

WARNING: Unable to find CorePointer in X configuration; attempting to add new
CorePointer section.

WARNING: The CorePointer device was not specified explicitly in the layout;
using the first mouse device.

WARNING: Unable to find CoreKeyboard in X configuration; attempting to add new
CoreKeyboard section.

WARNING: The CoreKeyboard device was not specified explicitly in the layout;
using the first keyboard device.

Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

xorg.conf now looks like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
# generated from default
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
# generated from default
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NoLogo" "True"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "nvidia-auto-select"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Just tried rebooting to no avail. Uninstalled the nVidia driver and I'm back. I forgot to mention I tried the sudo dpkg etc. to rebuild my xorg.conf file after this happens, that doesn't work either. Very much a bummer right now, I have my desktop but no 3D acceleration.

How about trying the nvidia drver from their website an compiling it?

Wintaru

One step ahead of you, downloaded the 185 driver and followed the steps on the NvidiaManual page with no luck :(

you're probably better off searching and asking on http://nvnews.net

nvidia dev's hang out there and they're the only ones who can help with driver bugs..

can you boot it into command line mode.

Login as Root and run "startx" to see what happens?

Also dmesg output would be helpful.

Wintaru
September 28th, 2009, 11:47 AM
I'll try both of those, give me a moment...

Wintaru
September 28th, 2009, 11:59 AM
Ok, when I log in on the command line, I then typed "sudo bash" to get root, then typed "startx".

Obviously no copy and paste (typing this from my Mac), so forgive any typing errors as I recreate what I'm seeing:

(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation Support
at http://wiki.x.org
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I'll check for that log file when I roll back the driver, but now I'm trying dmesg now, dumping its results to a log file and I'll post those after I roll the driver back. One moment.

One moment.

Don't do "sudo".

From the Console of your machine login as root. Do CTRL+ALT+F1. That should give you the first terminal if you are booting straight into X.

Login as "root" from the command prompt and then run startx.

I'm reaching the point where I'm going to try enabling with just one card in, then if that works install the other. I'm prepping this rig to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7, as I'm getting a copy early since I'm hosting a house party and I've always wanted this computer to run Ubuntu as well. I want to demo some games running in SLI so it's important that I can have both cards installed. Will post back if it works.

It is definitely related to the dual cards, the driver works fine with one card, but as soon as I plug in the other it doesn't work anymore.

Well I managed to get it working, but I'm not sure how. I'll try to carefully document my steps here and in the nvnews forums so if anyone else is looking they can try it too.

First, I started with a fresh install of Jaunty. I don't remember all of the fiddling I had done and so I needed a clean slate.

After the install finished, I shut down the computer and took out one of the cards, leaving the "main" card in (I don't have anything plugged into the second card, it's for SLI only).

Then I started the machine, enabled the nVidia restricted driver using the Hardware Drivers interface built into Ubuntu.

Next I shut down the computer again, then installed the second card. On boot I kept hitting ESC to catch Grub and started Ubuntu in recovery mode.

Once I got to the menu of options, I dropped into root, and first I tried to run this command:

nvidia-xconfig -a

This failed (again), I got the error:

WARNING: error opening libnvidia-cfg.so.1: libnvidia-cfg.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory.

ERROR: Unable to determine number or location of GPUs in system; cannot honor
'--separate-x-screens' option.

Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

I followed the instructions here: http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-dist@lists.debian.org/msg586926.html, and set up a symbolic link. Note that you will have to change the path to fit the driver you are using. So in the link, their command is this:

ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia/libnvidia-cfg.so.173.14.09 /usr/lib/libnvidia-cfg.so.1

Mine looks like this:

ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia/libnvidia-cfg.so.180.44 /usr/lib/libnvidia-cfg.so.1

Once I did that, I ran this again:

nvidia-xconfig -a

This time it works. Now I tried these steps in the past, but the difference was I was not logged in as root, I was using sudo. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I'm assuming it was either that or the fact I started with a fresh install of Ubuntu.

Now I have both cards in and its working perfectly. Thanks to all for the tips and pointing me in the correct direction, hope this helps others.
