Steampunk/Vintage desktop

So my eldest purchased himself a nice shiny new Toshiba laptop, and I've inherited his old Compaq. Perfect for a permanent install of Ubuntu, since I've got to dual-boot the desktop until Maxon get round to releasing a native linux version of Cinema4D. I'd normally go for nice shiny modern looking theme, but since the laptop is pretty much held together with duct-tape and luck I thought I'd go for a vintage/steampunk look.

Gauges are Manometer screenlet http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Manometer
Clock is the vintage theme from http://gnome-look.org
The wood texture for the panels is slightly modified from Prayor' steampunk thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=848956.
Chrome/Chromium theme is the standard "Desktop" theme.

I'm still getting to grips with creating metacity themes, so thats the next thing on the list.

I did consider doing something similar, but a)My woodworking skill are sadly lacking. b)I'm likely to wreck the thing taking it apart in the first place. c)although the various pieces of duct-tape, velcro and expoxy putting holding the lid in place look less than elegant, I'm still able to have the laptop actually on my laptop when required, something I'm not sure I'd be able to do without cutting off circulation if I did actually manage to build a nice wooden case for it.

The other option is to wrap it in a woodgrain laptop skin and add some metal trim to create the steampunk look.

I did consider wrapping it in vinyl, after seeing some of the sticky-backed srot in my local discount store. The other thing I'm thinking about is maybe using my very rusty model-airplane "skillz" to repaint the whole case with a weathered brass/metalic finish, depending on if I can find a brass replacements for the velcro-and-plastic-stick support for the screen in my local B&Q.
