Hello All,

I'm trying to convert an IBM NetVista dekstop system using a Gateway EV700 monitor from Suse to Ubuntu.

After installing Ubuntu, the X-Windows desktop is not functioning properly -
- the display is listed as Unknown with 1024x768 resolution , and no options for increasing to 1280x1024
- the color mapping for xterms appears to be white text on a white background (the xterm is all white)
- when using firefox, scrolling windows under mouse control is very sluggish and jerky

When Suse was installed on this hardware, the X-Windows desktop had none of these problems.

I suspect Ubuntu X-Windows is not configured correctly.

Here is a copy of the Ubuntu /etc/X11/xorg.conf file -
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I have tried using sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg but it has not helped the situation.

I have also tried editing stanzas from the old Suse xorg.conf file into the new Ubuntu xorg.conf file , but that has not helped (in a few cases it made the Ubuntu desktop worse).

When I use the Ubuntu "ascii terminal" console (control-alt-f1), the display appears to be just fine (of course there is no windowing system running).

So, I'm pretty convinced this is an X-Windows problem.

In the old Suse environment, I used the SaX utility to configure the display - but I guess SaX is not available in Ubuntu.

I've noticed many posts about unknown displays, resolution problems, and other X-Window issues with Ubuntu - evidently X-Windows config problems are somewhat common with Ubuntu.

I'm hoping someone has had experience resolving a similar issue and can share their thoughts.

Thanks, I would appreciate your help.

Have you looked in System>Administration>Hardware Drivers yet? There may be video card drivers available.

Hello Shazaam,

This PC uses the onboard graphics subsystem which is on the motherboard (not an added in graphics card).

When I select the the System -> Administration - > Hardware Drivers menu selection, a window is popped up which states "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

Hopefully this additional info will be helpful, here is a copy of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log log file -

Hmmm. Here is the relevant part...

Section "Device"
BoardName "I815"
BusID "0:2:0"

I will search (I suggest you do it also) for info for that chipset.

Old posts/links I found so far...

I have an old fx5200 nvidia card. and an Acer Monitor 1440x900 resolution.

Since Hardy came out - to get Ubuntu to display at the optimal resolution. I use the monitor and display section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf generated by a Puppy Linux install.

It would not hurt to try the ones generated by Open Suse in Ubuntu, Its a good thing you have then around

Hi Shazaam,

Thanks for the reference to the "Jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide" - I am working through it right now.

Unfortunately when I execute the command "sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com AF1CDFA9" , it takes a very long time and eventually the following error messages are displayed -
gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error

Could this be something simple such as the key server at keyserver.ubuntu.com is temporarily unavailable (and if I try later in the day, it should be OK) - or do you think there could be other issues ?

Thanks again, I do appreciate your help Shazaam.

Hello again,

I was able to get past the "keyserver timed out" issue.

I have completed the steps listed for the Safe Configuration - however I'm still having what appear to be the same problems.

I notice in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file messages which lead me to suspect that the new entires edited into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (AccelMethod, EXAOptimizeMigration, MigrationHeuristic, and Tiling) are not being utilized. These messages have been extracted from the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file beginning at line 475 (the whole file is included at the end of this post) -
(WW) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "MigrationHeuristic" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "Tiling" is not used

Additionally, it appears that the downloaded /usr/local/bin/fixmtrr.sh script is working properly. Here is the output from the /usr/local/bin/fixmtrr.sh script -
Extracing base address and memory size from lspci -v
f8000000
40000000

Supplying corrected MTRR ranges to /proc/mtrr
doing nothing, MTRR range already set up
reg00: base=0x000000000 ( 0MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x00ff00000 ( 255MB), size= 1MB, count=1: uncachable
reg02: base=0x0f8000000 ( 3968MB), size= 64MB, count=1: write-combining

Since I am unable to get the Safe Configuration working properly, I am reluctant to go on to the Optimal configuration.

I would be interested in your thoughts.

Thanks again for you help.

Hi louieb,

Just a quick reply to say thanks for your post.

I did try your suggestion (actually I was thinking along similar lines) but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm currently working through the "Jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide" document recommended by Shazaam.

This document infers there may be some problem between the Intel i815 graphics subsystem and the Ubuntu kernel / driver - so that's what I'm currently pursuing.

Thanks again, if you have additional thoughts I would be interested in them.
