so i want to put ubuntu on my old desktop to check it out (its a Dell OptiPlex GX1. ran 98 for a while now having it run XP). so i went to the site and downloaded 9.04.3 Desktop (in a .rar file) and tried to istall it it went ok until it got to the part where started checking the installation. i left it for at least half and hour and it is stuck at zero. can anyone help me out i really want to use ubuntu but can seem to install it. i also tried to install in the ACPI mode and that did not work either. i then tried to go to demo mode and that got me to the desktop but there is nothing there. where the menu should be there is a big white line and one also at the top. can anyone help. i only conclusion is i must have made the CD wrong but i dont know how to do it any other way. i used winrar to extraxct the files and put all the files that were extracted onto a cd and then put it in my machine and it works up until the point just after the loading screen when it stops at 0% during the "check the installation". any help is much excepted. thanks
