Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition for the Inspiron Mini 10v is here. As we shared at the Intel Developer Forum today, Dell and Canonical have worked closely to ensure good hardware/software compatibility, and seamless integration between Ubuntu and Moblin. For those not familiar, Moblin is an open source project, created by Intel and hosted by the Linux Foundation, focused on building a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices. It has a unique user interface focused on using the Internet, social networking activity, and media consumption, and is optimized for small screens. The Moblin project recently released version 2.0, which includes many new features such as the myzone home screen panel, aggregation of social networking content (such as Twitter, last.fm, and instant messaging), a web browser optimized for the user interface, a "zoomable" media player, and an updated connection manager with a new user interface.

For a bit more, watch this demo from Doug Anson:

Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has combined the core Moblin Version 2.0 interface, libraries, and applications with the internals of Ubuntu Linux 9.04 to create a new Linux distribution, Ubuntu Moblin Remix. We have labeled this distribution as a "Developer Edition", as it is still a work in progress at this time. We are currently targeting developers, Linux enthusiasts, and early adopters who want to get an early look at the software and begin developing for Moblin, participating in the community, and using new technology.

Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition can be purchased factory-installed on an Inspiron Mini 10v on from http://www.dell.com/ubuntu. To download the Ubuntu Moblin Remix installation image, or for more information, please visit our Moblin wiki page (http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Moblin)

i can't understand if MOBILIN is the same like Ubuntu REMIX ?
And ... i can see the Dell mini 10v has poor hardware than the 10 ...the 10 comes with HDMI connection for example....
what do you think
is it okey to write this comment here ? :)

Is there a live CD (or live USB) image that we can try? I'd really like to try this but I don't have two hard drives to swap around. I tried booting the image, but it only has an install option, no "try before you buy" option.

The lack of HDMI my no means make it poorer than having HDMI input/output. This is just a preference if you're in that nitch. How many netbook users need HDMI? Please indulge me.

But seriously, the hardware between the two is barely different, safe for the processors. And it has been noted a few times that the Atom processors run Ubuntu and linux in general somewhat better than teh mini 10 counterpart. Also there have been reports that Ubuntu treats N280 as if its the N270.

Can you back up this claim that the mini 10v is indeed inferior in hardware to the mini 10?

But that's for "Real" Moblin and not UMR. I don't think there's a nondestructive way to run UMR.

I'm new to Ubuntu. I loaded 9.10 side by side on my laptop. I love it because it is not as cumbersome as Windows. I'm considering buying one of those Dell Ubuntu Mini 10s.

I have a question about those Minis and it is about Ubuntu in general...Do I need an antivirus when running Ubuntu? Do I need anti spyware and anti malware. Is there a firewall built in? Do the Dell netbooks come with security software?

There's no special security software with the Ubuntu that comes with the 10v (nor with the more recent versions of generic Ubuntu that you can install). It isn't necessary, but if you feel safer with some sort of antivirus software you can find some in the repositories.

why not create a UNE 10.04 post in place of moblin?

I love the UI of Moblin, but it seems to have some basic file management limitations.

Since the original Moblin is now toast as it is going to become Mego when it fully merges with Maemo, I wish Cannonical would remix the remix to adopt the clutter interface of Moblin, as I greatly prefer it to the current UNR, even with it's recent face lift.

Moblin was a great idea, but I could never realize its potential, as I just kept hitting road blocks trying to set things up. Some worked, some didn't, but I still LOVED the clutter interface, and keep a copy on a USB stick for tinkering with (perhaps someday I will figure it out).

BTW - I heard that Mego was a third choice for the name, as they originally wanted to go with "Frodo" and then "Bilbo", but ran into copyright issues on both counts... ;-)
