There is a new version of Firefox out (3.5) and I know it is available for Linux, but I haven't had any luck with it for Ubuntu.

I am using 3.01, which is what came with my mini 9.

Anyone know if you can upgrade Ubuntu to the new Firefox version and how do you do that?

Thank you.

search in Synaptic Package manager for firefox-3.5 your going to what to use the search button so don't just type firefox-3.5 in to the search box because you will get to many results. after you install that you should find Shiretoko Web browser in the Internet menu idk why its called that but its really the latest version of Firefox

if you still need help repost and I'll see what I can do when I get home from class tonight

I hope this helps
Dan

I don't think that will work for the default Dell Ubuntu (8.04 lpia).

Honestly, I am now routinely recommending people upgrade their Mini 9 to 9.04, which has FF3.5 available as per metalf's advice.

Get the 9.04 Netbook Remix file from the ubuntu.com homepgae, and follow the instructions there.

There is also good advice on ubuntumini.com

may i just chip in here.

i had this same problem a few days back. I installed "Ubuntuzilla", its actually quite popular and it works perfectly! What it does is allows you to install the latest version of firefox as soon as it is released. I'm now using firefox 3.5.3! :)

here's the link:

I do not think that "Shiretoko Web browser" is in the 8.04 repos. I think it is there only for 9.04. If you "must" have 3.5, you can download the tar ball at Mozilla Firefox. Perhaps others here have done it this way and had success in running it under 8.04 Hardy.

I installed "Ubuntuzilla"

You may want to clarify that the i386 .deb works on the lpia version of Ubuntu on the Mini first.

can that be done with the special version of Ubuntu 8.04 that comes with the Dell Mini 9? Because its not the same version that can be downloaded for free sins it has some proprietary software that comes with it

The proprietary software you mentioned is flash and codecs, all of which are readily available, provided you have the rights to use them.

I found this link on Overclockers.com (http://maketecheasier.com/easily-upgrade-your-firefox-to-35-in-ubuntu/2009/08/12) & it installed on my Mini 9 without taking up amy more space too. How to Easily Upgrade your Firefox to 3.5 (and future version) in Ubuntu - Make Tech Easier
The instructions say to run ubntuzilla.py, I had to add -b at the end as I only have the 4 gb ssd & no space for a backup. It seems to work fine & will update as Firefox releases future updates.

As far as I know - No it can't.

The proprietary software is not particularly useful:

Dell Video Chat -> use Skype (or others)!
Codecs -> I think you can get the fluendo mp3 codecs free anyway, although for most non-US residents, it is entirely legal to just download them from medibuntu.
Can't remember what else, but I certainly don't miss anything.
