Seems that a new version of mount is needed to be able to use ext4 on my server. I installed a 500GB disk and mounted it off /disk2 for want of a place to put it.
when I formatted the disk with ext4 mount could not see it. SO I had to go back and reformat to ext3 for it to work.
I am considering adding some USB disks, but given the problem, I am now waiting until Ubuntu can get around to updating the mount in the distro to one that works with ext4.
I know other distributions are ahead in this regard.
