I installed avast AV (AvastWorkstation 1.0.8-2) but cannot access the program through the applications menu. I do not even know it is running, because I dont see it in System Monitor. What can I do to change that?

Uninstall it. You don't need it.

Hi,
You need the debian version of Avast and I do not recognise the number you quote so I suggest you check it. When installed in Xubuntu you will find it under Accessories so try there.
I use wine and regard Avast as extremely useful to check my Home directory.
My regards
