We somehow have Skype...yet no Jabber. Honestly, how hard can it be? I, a person who has never learned PHP managed to add new profile fields in PunBB. I know it's different software, but the admins here are smart no doubt, can they not figure it out?

ubuntu-geek has pointed pointed out that somone came out with a plugin for vBulletin that adds the skype box, he also said he is looking into adding a gtalk/jabber box.
It is in no way due to lazy admins that we dont have the box. I for one would really like it and Im sure as soon as they can the admins will add it. If you know of an easy way to add it in please let them know.
btw my gtalk = earobinson or you can click the contact me link in my sig for all my contat info

seems to work.
This may be a bit pickey but shouldent it be jabber/Gtalk Id since they are the same thing. + Jabber is a bit more open source.
NOTE you could still put earobinson@jabber.com In fine. Also anyone got any idea how easy it will be for a spambot to get that email?
ubuntu-geek
February 20th, 2006, 03:39 PM
Yeah I can make it say jabber as well. In order to get the email address for any of the chat clients the spambot would need to actually click on the icon to popup the javascript window and then parse it.

It shouldn't be be "Jabber/GoogleTalk" but only "Jabber". Googles servers are just participating in the Jabber network.
Or do you want to list everybody who runs some servers? : )

Thanks for the update UG :)

I think Jabber/Googletalk is fine. Googletalk might finally bring some recognition to free IM-protocols in a way that no single server has done before.
As for the feature itself, I just discovered it myself, fiddling around with my profile for absolutely no reason without a thought of having posted in this thread earlier today. :D
Edit: Did I really type in Gnometalk instead of Googletalk? Oh, my. That's wierd. o_O

I added my jabber id (my gmail address). I hit "Save Changes" then it says "You have entered an Invalid birthday." I didn't even change anything of my brithday. I tried hitting the "clear" button beside the birthday fields and it's still no good.

Hi Administrators,
I, the original poster, can't seem to make this jabber/gmail field work. It always says "invalid birthday." Can you have a look into my account?
Please refer to post number 17 of this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=755401&postcount=17)
Thanks.

When you enter your birthday - you need a month, date, and year. Most likely - you haven't entered the year. :)

You're right. Entering my complete date of birth makes things work.
But why is this required information? Why can't we just have our birthmonth and birthday without inputting our birth year?

The jabber links aren't working for me, when I click on them I just get brought to the top of the page.

It is almost Christmas 2006. Could my Christmas present be the ability to add jabber/gtalk to my account profile?
PS It is the same as ubuntu's login name. Just add @gmail.com to it. :p

I would like to add my support to adding Jabber to the user profile. It's the only IM service I use, because it is Free Software.

Could you elaborate?
And is this something we in the community could step up and help with?

I would be more then happy to give access to a development board for vbulletin plugin/product coding.
So far, the only way I have seen to add another protocol with the integration the current ones have is to hack the actual php files.
Now it is possible to just add a field into the user profile but it will not work like the current ones..

cant it just be plain text with no on/off line funcinality this should be easily done no?

This would be more than fine with me and would certainly be more than worthwhile until we could get anything more functional added in.

You could just add Jabber to your signature, like I just did.;)
(Until a more permanent solution is found.)

it would be nice, instead of building a hack to the user profile that this could be added to the dropdown box at the members name...

The option could read:
Send an IM to RAV TUX

In the profile there is no field to enter a jabber id.
For the ubuntu forum I think it would be most needed to allow an jabber id entry for a users profile. IMHO Jabber/XMPP is a trustworthy instant messaging system for FOSS people due to it's decentral design and it's documented and open protocol (RFC). It's even quite easy to use and it would be not too tough to even allow reminders on new posts to be sent to the specified jabber id instead of email.
In case you don't already know: google is using Jabber/XMPP for their gtalk, too and their voip addon is an open sourced lib (libjingle) :)
Just think about it ... since the other IM networks often have a clause in there license agreement which says that they allow themselves to do everything with the information you send through their servers.
MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, Skype are proprietary protocols with an extremly high market share I think they should be handled like bug #1 ;-)
I hope you'll consider it ...

good idea, you can also advertise your jabber handle through your siganture, just in case you can't wait.
