First off, I have Ubuntu 9.04 up and running on my Dual 2.7 GHz PPC G5. I love it! However, I have many questions. I will be asking them one at a time as to fix them one at a time and not get overwhelmed.
First question:
Am I going to be able to ever get system sound to play through my factory installed fiber optic output? If so, how?
Thanks in advance.

I am new to Linux so I don't know if this applies to all fiber optic connections. I am using the HDA Intel Alsa. When I open up the volume control
go to preferences.
then check IEC958
then there is a tab for switches I have all checked
From what I read this is standard codec for fiber optic out. I also went through Unbuntu-Freak's comprehensive multimedia guide in the multimedia section
I am using my onboard optic out to logitech Z5500 so far so good and hope this helps

I think it should come up as an audio device in the sound preferences.
