I accidentally deleted my panel. Now, I can't get the tray going. I try to run thunderbird and other similar program in background, but the tray does not show up. Just want to know how to reset the panel to the default condition. Thanks in advance.

Check this out -> http://linuxfud.wordpress.com/2007/02/14/how-to-reset-ubuntugnome-settings-to-defaults-without-re-installing/
Hope that helps.

Or, the GUI way:
Go to Places-> Home folder. Hit View->Show Hidden Files. Delete the following folders .gnome. .gnome2. .gconf, .gconfd, .metacity. This will reset gnome settings. Hit View->Show Hidden Files. (Unchecking it this time, so you don't have to always see the hidden files.)

(This is assuming the Places menu is still there, if not, tell me and I'll help you around that. )

Also, welcome to the ubuntuforums :P
