Hi,

I would like to upgrade my desktop computer with a new videocard, and I would like to hear some opinions on wich card to buy.

Relevant information:

Motherboard: Asus K8N (comes with 8x AGP)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Memory: 1 Gb
Current GPU: Radeon 9200 (No fglrx support, and damn old card.)
Power supply: CODEGEN, 350W

I would like a videocard capable of at least playing EVE Online in linux.
(Yes, they just dropped support for Linux, but I hope I can play it trough wine)
That means cards that support Shader Model 3,

NVIDIA GeForce 6100, ATI Radeon X1300, ATI Radeon HD 2600 and up.

Mainly I would like some suggestion about what card to avoid, and wich ones could work well with my Ubuntu box.

Thanks in advance.

I always read Tom's and like their chart at the end that compares performance.

Currently it seems that Nvidia works better. I have only had minor issues converting from a 7600gts to a 9600gt recently.
What size is your power supply? That may limit what you can install. A few years ago my son wanted more games and I put in a new video card and a month or two later the system died. Too much power draw wiped out motherboard and/or video card. But it became a good excuse to build my new dual boot system.

Thank you for the reply, especially for mentioning the power supply, I'm updating my first post now. (Then checking out the link you posted.)

There are power supply calculators on the internet. I had bookmarked these but ended up just looking at the amps required on the video card box and comparing the new power supply I was buying.

Thank you for the feedback so far,

I actually went to the HW store ,and there were only 3 cards wich would be a viable option, could I get some feedback about the Linux drivers for them plese? (working/not working/ 3D hardware acceleration/ bugs, etc.)

(I'm looking for running games (some via wine, and some native) too, so good 3D support is a priority)

Ati Radeon HD 2400 Pro
Ati Radeon X1650 Pro
GeForce 6200
