I wasn't sure whether this should go under Hardware and Laptops or Networking and Wireless, but here goes:

My brother-in-law wants me to install Ubuntu on his laptop for him. I tried installing Ubuntu 9.04 on it once before, but the only problem I came across (and it's a big one) is that Ubuntu didn't recognize his built-in ethernet or his built-in wireless. I didn't have enough time to troubleshoot it either, so he took it back home with him. I gave him a couple of other Linux distros to try to see if he had better luck and apparently he didn't because he's bringing it over to me tonight to see what I can do. I forget what brand the laptop is (some off-brand), but it appears to be fairly new. My laptop is 7 years old and ubuntu recognizes all my hardware, so I'm not sure why it's not recognizing his networking components. What do I need to be looking for? Where do I begin with this?

Wow, not one post. Seriously? No ideas?
