View Full Version : [gnome] continuous throbbing cursor over the desktop

After logging into a gnome session at home, I have a continuous throbbing mouse cursor over the desktop. This is a plain rotating icon, no arrow. I assume that some program in the startup script is not releasing a resource. This has not prevented me from working... On the same machine, another user can login, but gets an off-white screen with a white mouse cursor arrow. The desktop is not visible. We can both login error free with failsafe-Gnome. That is where I am now.

So, to begin with:
1) For my login session, what process makes the cursor throb over the desktop?
2) Will the startup script(s) have a clue? I found ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc, nothing stands out... should I look elsewhere?
3) Will error messages suggest the cause? I found the menu: [system] [administration] [system log], no errors stand out, but what do I know?
4) Is there a simple way to rebuild (perhaps Gnome or X) without affecting my user accounts?
