Was just browsing computer weekly when i came accross this article!

http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2006/02/07/214088/NovellgivesLinuxagraphicsboost.htm

the interesting bit is at the bottom were it says that it is going to be implemented into the X.org project

does this mean ubuntu would benifit from this advance???

If it's true and not just a rumor than it will be just a matter of time before other distro's will load it up or maybe make a own version?

it would be a very good step forward and yet another one closer to getting more people over to linux!!! I dont care what distro tempts people off windows as long as something does!

Another interesting thing about that presentation is the gnome menu novell has created. It has beagled incorporated and I particulary find it quite beautifull.

Xgl isn't really new there is been talk about it for a while. Also AFAIK it's an FOSS project so it will be available to the community.

I see they have a link to the source on that page. What are the chances of getting this to work with an ATI card?

Novell out of left field throws in an OpenGL compositor and opens it up.

Some guys have already started playing with this (and gotten it to work) in dapper. Check post 143 of this thread (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=124867&page=15) for a howto. I think you need dapper (xorg7) and I don't think anyone's had success with ati yet.

I think it's going to make it's first appearance in Novell Linux Desktop 10.

I think it's going to make it's first appearance in Novell Linux Desktop 10.

I don't think so. It will make its first appearence in the SUSE repository or on a Live CD made for the purpose by someone.

It was demoed using hte Novell Linux project but the SUSE part is where the newer stuff goes.
