Hey,
I was doing some illegal downloading :P and I kinda sorta really REALLY screwed up my dad's Sony Vaio media center PC WHICH RUNS WINDOWS XP. So, i popped in my ubuntu hdd, slaved his to it and installed AVG 8.5 ON UBUNTU SINCE THE VIRUS DISABLED ALL ANTIVIRUS ON HIS WINDOWS. To scan I do this
avgscan /media/disk -a -p -B -r /home/chris/Desktop/avgreport
and in the avgreport text file it gives me this
AVG command line Anti-Virus scanner

Hi, there have been several report 'issues' with AVG on Linux.

The likes of BitDefender may be better suited to your needs

A 'how-to' on Bit Defender can be found here.

As it is a windoze problem, I'd suggest following this thread.

http://www.vpolink.com/showthread.php?t=14

I wrote it a while ago, but I do keep that section upto date.

Fell free to post any comments on their - I do pick them up & respond.

There are a few things to try before contemplating a new laptop, but you'd be better discussing them there, rather than on the Ubuntu forum.

Hope that helps,

Phill.

P.S. - You'll have to join VPOLink to post - as with all forums. When you post, say that it is in response to Ubuntu forum.

Avast has a linux version with a really simple UI too - http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-for-linux-edition.html

Having said that, I tried using it to clean up a windows install in the same way, but got no joy from it. Trying to clean viruses caused it to crash. Might work for you though if Bitdefender doesn't for some reason.
