The last time I had this error the /boot directory was too far "back" on the partition for my MoBo to go read. I'd suggest creating a partition (only need about 100mb if you have multiple kernels) at the beginning of the drive and have it mounted to /boot. This usually happens when you're dual-booting and the /boot drive is on the back end of the drive.

Happened to me too.

Re-installation of Ubuntu = Fail

Re-installation of the Acer OEM Recovery Disks = Fail

Solution, for me at least, = Install Windows 7, then fresh basic re-install of Ubuntu

Did you change boot order in BIOS or change partitioning?

no idea what happened i did a clean install of jaunty. since i have a separate hdd for it and for my music. now every thing seems to be fine, i did lock version for firefox and for at least the last two hours no shut downs. i am hesistant to down load any updates even though i have a red arrow down for it. at least i can boot up.
