The last time I had this error the /boot directory was too far "back" on the partition for my MoBo to go read. I'd suggest creating a partition (only need about 100mb if you have multiple kernels) at the beginning of the drive and have it mounted to /boot. This usually happens when you're dual-booting and the /boot drive is on the back end of the drive.

Happened to me too.
Re-installation of Ubuntu = Fail
Re-installation of the Acer OEM Recovery Disks = Fail
Solution, for me at least, = Install Windows 7, then fresh basic re-install of Ubuntu

i wouldn't even know where to start it has vista on half the drive and jaunty on the other the home folder and music are on separate drives????

Did you change boot order in BIOS or change partitioning?

no idea what happened i did a clean install of jaunty. since i have a separate hdd for it and for my music. now every thing seems to be fine, i did lock version for firefox and for at least the last two hours no shut downs. i am hesistant to down load any updates even though i have a red arrow down for it. at least i can boot up.
