I have an Acer Aspire 5520 with an AMD Athlon TK-55 processor which is making a noise which initially is rather antonym, but after a while makes a “take off” noise which is almost continuous. (My operating system is ubuntu 9.04.)

The sound probably originates from the fan as far as I can understand. It should be noted that it doesn't start disturbing before the computer has been running for half an hour. As it has driven me crazy I have tried different strategies to “calm” it down. In this process I found two “recipes” on the ubuntu forums for reducing noise (though both were targeted to Aspire One, something I didn't realize before having tried the receipes):

(I added two scripts (acer_ec and acerfand) to /usr/local/bin and made them executable.)

The second strategy was to install another script, but the system did not allow me to do the final process (which may have been because it was made for an Aspire One and not for Aspire 5520):

(I removed the two first scripts before trying this procedure.)

I will be very grateful if someone can help me to make the Acer computer more peaceful.

PS: By the way, the ubuntu community is really fantastic! Lot's of people who are helping each other just as the ubuntu philosophy
