Another fresh install won't boot

Hi all,

I took hold of a old Compaq iPaq last weekend and set about installing Ubuntu on to it.

I have to perform a network install as there's no CD drive and won't boot off USB. Ubuntu installed fine and had no problems rebooting.

I then issued the command:
> sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
and left it overnight.

Everything seemed to install OK but the machine now fails to boot.

I get past the BIOS screen to GRUB OK where it finds Ubuntu on hda0 but nothing else happens. It also fails to boot into the safe version of Ubuntu.

Any thoughts?
