View Full Version : Do you use Gnome or do YOU use something better?

Just wondering what other people out there use. I haven't really used anything other than Gnome. If you use something else, why? How is it better? Or at least more efficient for you.

I've been a GNOME user for 2 years or so until a month ago when I made the switch to KDE. So far I'm loving it, you should really try it out.
Edit: Wouldn't say that KDE is better, but for me it's really awesome.

So what do you like better about KDE though?

I am a openbox convert. it has many the advantage to gnome i figure. one of them being it is lightweight. other thing is that when i create the autostart and menu files and have set the wallpaper its looking great and I can just catch the most commonly used applications with a single click to get the menu and then click the item i need. I am a mouse person to some extend.

I never liked Gnome since it came out. I have been using happy with KDE since it was beta software in 1997.

What I like the most is that everything is so integrated with each other. In Gnome every program has its own look. Besides that I like the huge amount of customization options KDE offers.

Is that similar to XFCE?

My first experiences with Linux were with KDE (3 at that time), but the first time I used Gnome, I switched and never looked back. I have tried the new KDE4, but no, I don't think it is that beautiful, and prefer the Gnome simplicity and consistency. It is not for me, but I have nothing against KDE users. People should use whatever they like.

I use fluxbox I like the right click menu and how my screen is pretty much just my wallpaper and a tiny panel. I also really like how nothing comes with it ( nautilus? who needs it.

Thats one of the other ones I've tried. And although I didnt stick with it for long I did like it. I think I just didnt have the patience at that time to change all my Gnome ways.

No offence but the title seems inflammatory
I myself use kde on the desktop and icewm on the laptop
KDE looks nicer than gnome imo and i love the two row taskbar and program integration - k9copy can interact with k3b without me doing anything

Xmonad.
It's a tiling window manager configurable in Haskell. It has support for a bunch of algorithms, has easy keybindings, allows for quick control, has features such as urgency hooks, and integrates nicely with mpd (well, xmobar does).

nautilus? who needs it.
I agree, although I do like dolphin using the terminal is much easier
*hugs ls -A, cp [-Rvu], mv, rm, cd*

I think everyone should start with Gnome.. because they might have stability problems with KDE and give up on Ubuntu forever. If i hadn't tried Ubuntu on someone else's computer I would probably have given up on it for life.
I love KDE and if it worked for me I would use it. But I love Gnome now too.

When I first used Ubuntu, I used KDE 3.5.9, but once KDE 4.0 was released in Intrepid, I migrated over to GNOME.

i normally use xfce4 or a window manager, but this round i'm using gnome, but setup in a netbook style, i could do the same in xfce4, but i have no problems getting gnome to run as fast as xfce4.
i really like maximus from unr, i really like not having decorations in the way. i also prefer the normal taskbar instead of the window picker applet, so i have to do my own close button.
i also prefer the slab menu, of course i still got to tweak it. :D
i find it a lot faster to use once you get it set up & having just a selection of programs i want showing just makes it clean.
i just want simple, fast, clean, no crap on my desktop & panel.

I use dwm. I don't think I need a reason to say why it is better. It suits me, therefore, it is better. Try it. Maybe you might like it too?

I use Gnome (desktop), KDE (work) and Openbox (laptop) and I cant say that Ive actually got a favourite. Try Openbox, its nice, lightweight and looks awesome with the right background picture (though all of them do that to a certain extent).
I liked Xfce4 but the display differences to Gnome are not that big so if youre looking for a real alternative to Gnome maybe thats not it.
The Wikipedia article on Desktop environments has got screenshots of a variety of DEs: HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment#Examples_of_desktop_environmen ts)

Thank you for the link. I'm leaning twords OpenBox at this point. Its going to be either XFCE or OpenBox. Its a close race though. No one else has really caught my attention with something better.

I am really starting to like openbox too. Sometimes in like Gnome, but KDE is even worse about this imo, when you install a new application it puts in the menu where ever the hell is feels like it. In OpenBox, you set the path it opens under. For example if I install k3b, gnome sticks it in multimedia. Well what if I dont want to open it from multimedia?
Another thing I like is that its very light weight and very fast.

I like / need lightweight, but without a horrible square themes look like from the nineties. I've been using E17 for two years now. It combines speed with eye candy so I'm happy. It's still beta though (until Christmas). Openbox is also great, but you'll have to add panels and stuff yourself. I see that as a feature, but be prepared to be staring at a gray screen only if you start openbox the first time.
The trick with window managers / desktop environments is to find a useful howto that gets you started. Just try out some, it's pretty easy.

I use Gnome, as at the moment it really is very well integrated into Ubuntu, and it's rocket-fast.
My favourite though is KDE, and I also like Enlightenment and XFCE :)

Awesome (http://awesome.naquadah.org/)
Is it better?
For me? Yes, I really couldn't go back to Gnome.
For you? No idea, you'd only find out by trying.
The same could be said of all WM/DEs in Linux. It's one of the benefits of Linux, if you don't like something there is almost always a dozen other apps you can use instead.
There is no best app, there is only the best app for you. It's not like you have to pay to try them, "apt-get install" and see what you think.

I started with Gnome, played with KDE for a bit and kinda liked it but on my 'puter it was really slow and resource hungry.
I'm using LXDE now - uber lightweight and fast, very simple and "newbie-friendly." I've become an LXDE fanboy.
Openbox (ala Crunchbang) is also awesomely fast and lightweight. Stark, minimalist beauty and lots of hidden power. It's the default on my laptop.

I never really liked any of the "*box" window managers until I came across #! Crunch Bang. Open Box is the default and it is Ubuntu based. It was very well done.
