Which do you guys prefer and why? I am using KDE now, but I find it difficult to customize.
Thanks

Gnome on Ubuntu, KDE4 on Slackware.
I find KDE pretty easy to customize once you figure out where to change different settings. And it sure is prettier.

I've just started using KDE (Kubuntu) myself. I really like it so far and might stick with it for a while. The eye-candy is... well sweeter and the plasmoids are nice too. I do like nautilus over Dolphin however, and Ubuntu's theme manager is a lot better than Kubunuts. Of course being able to install KDE UI related items within the OS is very nice as well!

How do I install an Icon Theme.
Depends on where you get it. If you get it from the "Get New Themes" button, it should install automatically.
If you get it from elsewhere, you have to add it with the button on the Icon theme manager ( I'm not in kde right now so I can't be much specific than that)
Do you have a specific theme in mind? Link?

I install the desktop theme notxp, but I get a message saying it will not display properly because the icon package is not install.

I prefer KDE 4.2 to any version of GNOME, but find KDE 4 earlier than 4.2 just impossible to use (haven't tried 4.3 - it's supposed to be way better than even 4.2 but I don't have the time to subversion a whole desktop environment).
I also prefer KDE3.5 to any version of GNOME.
The only desktop environment that I prefer GNOME to is XFCE, which seems pretty similar (but somehow even worse).

Why SVN? I got 4.3 from here, I think:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu
But I fail to see how it's better than 4.2.

Personally atm I use Gnome more but KDE is just as nice. I like the simplicity of Gnome though... Sleek, Simple, and Powerful.

I don't understand why people say KDE looks better. I honestly look at KDE and think - "Really?"
I think Gnome is more functional, more logically laid out, better looking, more customizable, etc.
I like how KDE is available, though. Because that's the beauty of Linux in itself - Choice. I just find KDE to be lacking in, well, every department. But hey, I'm not right, nor am I wrong. Gotta use what you like.

But you've seen what can be done with Qt right? And the effects of KDE 4.x?

I must say that after installing Windows 7, the comparison of GNOME and KDE is making me play with KDE more and more on my VBox. I realize a lot of the ideas for them to build Windows 7 had to have been inspired on some level by KDE. I give props to KDE and GNOME for making Ubuntu and other Linux's a great look.

damn, i have to agree that the globe thingie was WAY cooler than i expected
i really hate the lack of beatiful themes and the support for certain apps but it seems worthy , i may install it on virtualbox (i don't want to mess with a multi-environment installation, it never ends well.)
tell me something about it , can i make the panels look and work like gnome's? i can't say that the kde's ones are of my taste
i Need two of them , and i need them gnome-like

That's his opinion and you know what they say about opinions.
what i was taught about opinions is that they are made out of logic, and by asking him to give me good examples on how kde is better than gnome, he has a chance to prove it to me
and by the way, he made a good work out of it, with the first video at least. i can't say that i liked dolphin, nautilus is better for me

You can make them look like Gnome's. Matter of fact you don't really need a panel if you don't want one.
As far as making them work like Gnome's? I'm not sure what that means exactly except that it be a panel.

i want it to have the menu like gnome does with apps/places/system, the notification area and the clock on top, the window list and the panels on the botton
that's what i mean
i don't like how open windows are shown on kde's bar at all

I was under the impression that since you have been using Ubuntu for almost a year and a half that you had already tried Kubuntu on some level.
After reading one of Hop's previous arguements that Kubuntu looks better than Windows 7 and GNOME looks more like XP, I have to agree. KDE's usability is a bit harder, but so was Ubuntu and Debian when I first tried. GNOME looks great and I love how it runs, but KDE just looks better... to me. Maybe just because it is new(to me), maybe because its true.

I know, it's good isn't it? ^_^
Thing is, even I with my mad over-the-top KDE 4 fanboy status still use Gnome at the moment because it really IS more polished in Ubuntu, and I still think KDE needs to hit maybe 4.4 before it really will feel mature. From there on, it will hopefully be big improvements and even more levels of awesome! :)
As for the panels... yes, I believe you can at LEAST arrange them like Gnome's, possibly even have the nice three-menu dropdown like on Gnome but I can't assure you of that as I've never tried it myself.
Dolphin... as I say that wasn't all it can do, my favourite feature is the way you can drag and drop entire panels much like you can drag tabs in Chrome. The whole thing shuffles and resizes in real-time! :)

the way you say it about the future of kde makes real sense. i'll probably try it at 9.10 and if i can make panels look like gnome's i might keep it :) (alongside gnome)
but gnome seems like a winner at this point
i would really like to make gnome use that globe thing , is there any way to do that?
