Hi guys !
Here is a news from the EasyUbuntu team.
EasyUbuntu (the first, easy, and secure magic Ubuntu configurator) version 3 is comming soon !
A preview version is available.
GET IT NOW and see the new website (http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/)
EasyUbuntu has been completly rewrited in Python / GTK and is really better and nicer than EasyUbuntu v2 and Automatix.
http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/images/screenshot1.png
Packages are now installed with Synaptic (no apt-get --force-yes), errors are grabbed and displayed, previous sources.list is replaced OR saved, all the files are backuped, ...
We only use trusted, safe and secure repositories.
There is also some new features (MIDI support, Ctrl + Alt + Del open the system monitor, ...) and some are comming soon (KDE/QT apps integrated in GNOME, OpenWengo VOIP, ...).
AMD64 and PPC are now supported (without w32codecs, Flash and Skype).
It's a preview release, there are some minor bugs and some minor functions are not working but it's safe.
Contributors and translators are welcomed : join us at #easyubuntu @ irc.freenode.org or read our launchpad page (http://launchpad.net/products/easyubuntu).
A module system and a GUI abstraction layer (for KDE/QT frontend)will be merged with the main trunk soon.

This app determines the operating system based on the contents of /etc/issue ?
One of the first things I do after a fresh install is replace the text in /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net with "This is a private network". I know a Red Hat employee who uses "Tresspassers will be shot!" in his /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files. I was told long ago by a Unix guru that, "it's a bad idea to advertise the operating system".
Wouldn't it be a better idea to determine the operating system by doing "lsb_release -a | grep Ubuntu" ?

Everything about easy ubuntu looks easy except for how to use it. I cannot find any documentation on the website or in the package about how to run the program. Am I missing something here or are you expecting everyone to know the command gksu ./easybuntu.py. Or perhaps they are expected to just click on the files until they find the desktop config file. I thought this was supposed to be 'easy' ubuntu.
If I was a first time user (fresh off the windows boat) that would put me off. You shouldn't have to be an experienced Linux user to use a program designed for n00bs.

* It's a preview release for testers and developpers, the desktop file is not ready.
When the first beta will be released you will be able to run EasyUbuntu in one click (like all others releases).
* Thanks for the lsb_release trick, we will use that.

I have not tried it yet. But I have a question: Does it now start with the options checked that you have installed?

No, that has not been implemented yet. It is a good idea, we still need to get some background work done before we can implement that feature.

Looks nice. I like that you ditched zenity!
I don't know what you said that got edited, but I can guess, and I probably agree with you!
I have not tried this. Before I do, is this a version for Dapper? If not, will there be one? Will there be a deb package available? Will a deb be included in universe or multiverse?

Yes, yes and yes.

No
Yes, yes and yes.
Hmm, I am not sure if we will be able to finish fixing all the bugs we know of before the feature freeze for Dapper. If not, then Dapper + 1.
So, I would say Yes, Yes and maybe :)

Do you have plans to follow the GNOME HIG (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/)? Most importantly you're lacking mnemonics (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/input-keyboard.html)and your spacings (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/design-window.html) are off. I'd be willing to hack on the Glade files if needed.

It doesn't install stuff if you already have them installed. Neither does it affect your sources.list, unless you want it to :)
So, please test it out. There are bugs we know of which are on our launchpad page, if you find a new one, file it :)

Where are the install instructions and maybe you should mention that it works in Kubuntu.

It doesn't install yet, you just download it and run it. I would recommend that you get the svn version, people are fixing bugs everyday!

It doesn't work on Kubuntu yet, I am working on a port.

Hi,
Just wanted to say thanks to people working on this project for the great work they are doing!
The fact that easyubuntu doesn't edit sources.list is a very nice feature; in this direction would be nice to have another tab with suggested unofficial repositories (and a description of what they provide) that user can view (and then copy and paste by hand in sources.list) or that can insert in source.list just selecting the repositories that he wants with checkbox and then clicking a button will add them to the sources.list.
bye,
Giovanni.
p.s.
is just me or there were some tutorials on the breezy customization guide that have been removed (maybe) because they told users how to did things that are being done by automatix? I can swear I saw howto about firestarter and numlock that can't find no more... and this for me sounds bad [-( :-k

EasyUbuntu also has this feature under the System Tab. It will enable (universe, multiverse, and plf) together in the sources.list. Another contributor is working on a page with a description of what each option does. The description of the repositories is avaialble in the help menu, so I think it will be redundant to include that.

I don't know about the forums, but i think they are available in the Ubuntu Starter Guide.

The subversion server is being moved/getting upgraded. I think it should be back up soon, hopefully. Meanwhile, this should work
wget http://robotgeek.org/easyubuntu-rev53.tar.gz
tar -zxf easyubuntu-rev53.tar.gz
cd easyubuntu
gksudo ./easyubuntu.py
Edit: the svn is up

ignore these things. happens when gtk app is launched from command line.
Synaptic exited with return code = 0
Nothing to worry about here too, it just means synaptic exited correctly. These are present for debugging puposes right now.
(gnome-terminal:8655): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.
I have no clue why this happened. If it happens again, file a bug. (see signature)
Gnome-Terminal exited with return code = 0
Same as synaptic
However, does EasyUbuntu work correctly? Do you have latest SVN (tarball has not been updated, some problem with the script to generate it, I guess)

.py are fully editable
Remember that Easyubuntu is under GPL
so if you release a fork you must use GPL license
and share source code too
(some people usually forget those simple rules)

It's nice that you think that he is wrong, but get ready for 101 GPL Ninja's to slash and burn you for not understanding the GPL. May I suggest you go and read the actual GNU General Public License (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html) (GPL) yourself? It's a nice website because it offers more than just English. This may be helpful seeing that your primary language may be some language other than English and the cause of your misunderstanding.
But to save you from the pain of 101 Ninja's slashing and burning you, here is a quote from the above mentioned website:
The GPL does not require you to release your modified version. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.
But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.

sorry bout that misunderstanding, ill gladly rerelease the source code, i do it with almost all of my applications anyways
i had read that cedega had copyrighted the wine3d(?) source code under the gpl and didnt release the source code, so thats why i thought that the gpl didnt make you release it. again sorry for the misunderstanding

Is EasyUbuntu stalled for the moment?
Are you just developping it in secret to make us a big surprise ?
