I think Gnome is good as is... simple but powerful. People still like Gnome as much as KDE.

Never, because the developers at Gnome don't want to go through rapid development with major changes all at once. Their development model is different from the KDE teams in that respect, KDE decided they had to bite the bullet and in one fell swoop modernize the whole thing, while Gnome is making incremental changes.

Indeed and they keep it powerful but simple... I love my Gnome :) , Very well expressed and put though. Could not have said it better.

I predict that Gnome 3 will be to XFCE what Vista was to OSX/Linux.

Gnome seems to follow the best philosophy of GUIs the world has ever known. "KISS!" or "Keep it simple, stupid!"

A top panel for launching applications and notifications, and a bottom panel for application/workspace management. Then stick a space in the middle for some running windows. You can't get much simpler than that.

KDE uses the Windows model: a complicated "K menu" (really a Start menu) for launching all applications, a small launch area for frequently used apps, a task area, a workspace manager, a notification area, and a clock, in that order from left to right, all on the bottom of the screen with fancy widgets taking up desktop space and RAM.

I don't think that trying to develop new, flashy things faster than they can be proven stable is the right move for Gnome. Make incremental improvements and, eventually, you'll find yourself with an amazingly stable and powerful tool with all the features it needs. Personally, I think they've got a pretty powerful, feature rich desktop environment right now, but to each his own...

How long do you think people will continue to use an unsupported DE? Eventually, they'll look for a new one. XFCE is the closest to gnome.

Its not the Gnome philosophy to keep adding flash to the desktop as KDE does. Gnome devs focus on usability and stability.

That being said you will not see anything remotely drastic until 3.0. But dont expect it to be a visual rework either.

Gnome stays consistent and stable. Thats the plus for gnome.
