I get the same error message when I either try to update indices using apt-get, or upgrade to 9.04 (I have 8.10) using System>Administration>Upgrade Manager.

That error is:

W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04.1 _Hardy Heron_ - Release i386 (20080702.1)]/dists/hardy/restricted/binary-i386/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs

What do I need to do to get around this and upgrade to 9.04? And why does it need to fetch it in the first place? Or is this a transient error, so that I should just try again after a while?

Why such desperate measures? What does this error condition really mean?
