desktop sharing with mac(server) and ubuntu(client)

Hi, I want to remotely control a mac via vnc. Screen sharing is set up, but when I try to connect with Krdc, vinagre, or xtightvncviewer it just stops and doesn't even ask me for the password. Krdc and vinagre merely show a blank screen. Does anyone know what I need to do to get vnc to work?

The same thing happens (the client simply shows a blank screen) when connecting to a windows machine running tightvnc. With the windows machine it works fine while I am on the same LAN, do i need to configure the network these computers are on somehow?
