Oolite-testing is now up to version 1.73.4.
Deb packages (Jaunty and Hardy) for i386 and amd64 Oolite 1.73.4-testing have now been released.
Despite the 'testing' label this release is actually more stable than the current 1.65 'stable' release. The update includes a huge number of bugfixes, support for shaders and normalmapping, nebulae, stellar coronas, procedurally generated planetary textures, joystick hat-switch support, lots of additional features available for creators of expansion packs (OXPs), language support (German, Italian, Russian and French OXPs added already) and much much more...
An Autopackage installer version is also available. So far it has been successfully installed on:
Ubuntu 8.04 & 9.04
Fedora 11
Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring
openSUSE 11.1
A 64-bit Autopackage installer is now available also. It has been tested successfully on the following 64 bit distros:
Mandriva 2009
Ubuntu 9.04
Deb packages are now available for 9.04 Jaunty and 8.04 LTS Hardy via repository and direct download at http://debs.oolite.org/
Autopackages are available from GURPO (BerliOS) (http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3577)
or

All I can say is wow. The screenies look very nice. Might give me a reason to pick up a flightstick again. Does this work with force feedback? Would be cool to feel the vibrations of getting shot.
*looks clueless since he hasn't used a joystick since his sidewinder force feedback2 that ended up cracking from extreme use.*

Joysticks yes, but no force-feedback at this time, sadly.. maybe in the Mythical Next Stable Release... which we hope will be 1.74 or 1.75.
Edit to add: However, it does play quite well even just with a keyboard.. many old-schoolers even prefer it that way..

Still cool, I remember playing some descent with the keyboard :) Will download it as soon as I get home from work and give it a test flight.

Maybe I did something wrong?
Nvidia 8200M G with latest drivers, installed the game (didn't find a "deb", just a .package file on the site, installed from there. Ran the game, no snazzy effects, and it gets stuck on a screen entitled "Commander Jameson". I tried to read a man page, but there wasn't one :( Well, think I got somewhere pressing all the buttons

The .deb package is for Jaunty, and I'm still running Intrepid, so I'm going to suss out the instructions here:
http://aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4595
and compile the sucker. I remember ELITE for the C=64 way back in the day and its wire-frame solid graphics and its "Right On Commander"s. It's so good to see the game carried on in open source, looking roughly 10^6 better...

Did you find the link to GURPO (BerliOS) via this page http://aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6628? If you got the download directly from Oolite.org instead of going to the Oolite-Linux forum at Oolite Bulletins you probably downloaded the old 1.65 version.
BerliOS has 1.73.3 available as both Jaunty debs and an Autopackage installer, as well as installers for Mac and Windows, and source code...
The new Autopackage has been successfully tested so far on:
Ubuntu 8.04 & 9.04
Fedora 11
Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring
openSUSE 11.1
Re "snazzy effects", maybe I should have emphasised more that the pretty ships and stations in the screenshots above are not part of the core game yet...(once all core ships have been remodelled, we hope to include them as an option in the next stable release). The 12 ships and 1 station done so far, are currently available as Oolite eXpansion Packs (OXPs). The easiest place to get all of them right now is via http://aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6586 I don't think there's a man page for the game, but you will find 3 PDF files, (a readme, a Reference Sheet, and an Advice for New Commanders) installed along with the 1.73.2 game.
Advice, trouble-shooting assistance and information are also always available at "The friendliest board this side of Reidquat™" (http://aegidian.org/bb/index.php) (How many boards can honestly claim they've NEVER had a flame-war? We haven't...:D) The Oolite board is very active and everyone is more than happy to be helpful, with none of the "RTFM noob!" attitude seen on many boards. There is also a FAQ and a huge amount of info and background available at the Oolite Wiki. (http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Oolite_Main_Page)
The Wiki also maintains a (more or less) up-to-date list of the more than 200 OXPs (http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/OXP) available, covering additional ships, stations, missions, flavour packs, HUDs, replacement sounds, planetary textures, languages, and more... there are also plenty more OXPs currently under development or being upgraded.
The only other thing I would advise is to make sure you have the latest available graphics drivers for your system... many problems that we are regularly asked about can be resolved simply by updating drivers.

Awesome, I look forward to modeling/skinning my own ship soon with blender :) Always wanted to do that, but all the space shooters were always closed source. Sorry for my confusion earlier, and I did get an old installer instead of the new deb.

A small clarification I was given regarding "stable" vs "testing"...
"The testing releases may be more 'stable' from a general running perspective, but the reason they are still in 'testing' is that the feature set is mutable; ie, not only are we adding features, we may also remove some before the MNSR."

If you go here (http://aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?p=85933#85933) and ask Micha nicely, he may well oblige.. he says if there's any demand he may make one.. alternatively, you could try the Autopackage, which works well with Hardy..

Absolutely amazing game effort.
Our page at the UGA project (http://gwos.org/doku.php/games:alphabetical:o:oolite) has been viewed a few 100s of times in the last 24 hours. Was trying to figure out why, and then I saw this thread.
Rockin.

Anyway I have just resolved my problem using "dpkg-buildpackage -r" (as it is indicated in the README.txt) to build the two packages for my 8.04 amd64 it was realmente facil to do that so.
Thanks though

Also, is there expansions for this?? every dock looks the same...kinda be kool if you can dock on the planet as well. also bigger ships. I'm thinking this game reminds me of armada and starfighter for the Dreamcast. just first person and slightly more boring. the docks in different in the solar systems could look different at least =/ please and thank you. kinda looks pretty some times. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd124/assripp3r/album%20name/OOlite/Screenshot.png
