VBox ubuntu guest blank screen before Login

Hi all

I have ubuntu 9.04 host with V box and Ubuntu 8.10 as a guest which worked fine up until a few days back. The problem is it loads up the splash screen and just before the login screen it goes to a blank screen and hangs there indefinitely. It works in the terminal but I need the Gui. Please help

What happens when you type "startx" in terminal?

It freezes i see the mouse and a funny looking screen and it just hangs cannot even move mouse pointer
