View Full Version : [SOLVED] Set Up a Router/Firewall based on Ubuntu Server

I would like to build a router/firewall box, for use at my workplace. I have been very happy with my previous ubuntu server projects- web server with file and print sharing, torrent, all the usual good stuff. I am hoping that the always awesomely flexible ubuntu is also up for the task of packet filtering and routing between several networks. [Edited: See Links in my Reply Below].

I have a moderately old Dell (Dimension 2300, P4 single-core w/384MB ram) that I have already fitted out with 4 NIC's. [Edited: Truncated]

I want to get started by simply getting a routing table set up between the four interfaces. Later on, I want to set up a fairly advanced firewall (unsure of the vernacular here so I will spare it) that will only allow selected ports to go between certain networks.

Thanks for any guidance!

Thank you for the suggestion on the platform to try. It looks like a good option. I have also found PfSense and a number of others at the following URL:

A friend of mine found the following tutorial. I thought something like this might exist; it was right under my nose, but somehow I didn't find it:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Router

Additionally, the following makes use of Webmin tool
http://ubuntulinuxhowto.blogspot.com/2006/06/setup-your-computer-to-be-router.html

As I suspected, Ubuntu seems to be a good platform for versatile routing. I am marking this thread as "Solved". I am confident that there is enough precedent that I can get my router off the ground successfully.
