Hi,

i recently got a laptop and put ubuntu onto it. I've been having some problems getting it to recognise the ethernet controller and the wirless card. I've had a look around on the forums and spent some time lookign about online.

From what i can tell it knows that the ethernet controller at least works, and the ndiswrapper is working.

I have the CD with he drivers on it, but there all in .exe format, and i havent been able to figure out how to get them off.

I'm running 8.10 and i'll post the lspci below:

Post lshw -C network - probably much the same information, but limited to network hardware.

You can use the ndsigtk gui to install the wireless driver which can be install via:
sudo apt-get install ndisgtk

But it will be looking for the .inf or the .sys files for the card.

If you try to run the .exe under wine will it create a folder with the driver files in it? Copy that folder to docs and try then use the ndisgtk to use those files? Just an idea.

I did see this:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ndiswrapper/+question/79685

good luck

linux6994: i tried that and i dont think i have the ndisgtk installed. i might try the WINE route, but id rather install it without it.

There is a solution for both the Wired LAN and Wireless on these systems.

Firstly the Wired Lan - the lspci output shows a JMicron Ethernet controller. This NIC uses the "jme" driver module which requires a 2.6.31 kernel in order to work properly, so you need to install a 2.6.31 kernel if you want wired networking to work.

You can find the latest 2.6.31 kernels here:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/

Secondly, Wireless Networking - the lspci output show it is a Realtek 8172 WiFi chip which requires the rtl8192se driver in order to work properly.

You need to download and install the native Linux Realtek 8192Se 32Bit and/or 64Bit driver from the following locations

for the 64Bit version:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34090404/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz

for the 32Bit version:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33927923/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009.tar.gz

These drivers work with Jaunty's 2.6.28 kernels

Youl'll need to compile the drivers, so make sure you do:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

This will ensure you have the right tools installed for compilation.

Good Luck.
