I'm very late to the voip stuff, but now I'm kind of curious about a linux wifi phone and ditching prepaid. Can I make a call for free from any hotspot? Looking for something with no monthly minimums, as well as fun gadget wise. And inexpensive.

My wife and I have been using Skype as our landline phone for over 4 years and couldn't be happier. A friend recently travelled to Europe for 3 months and I got him onto it before he went. Took his netbook all over and could always call home or anywhere else. It is AU 2.7 cents a minute to next door or London. Doesn't matter. You lease a number if you want people to be able to reach you. That is AU$16 for 3 months or $80 for a year.

Skype to Skype calls are free. You can have just a call out account (no number) and you just top it up when you need.

My wife and I have a call out account each and share the call in account (which has a number but we don't put money in that account to call out - just a call in account). Confusing perhaps but works for us!

We have saved a bundle, let me tell you!

Not bad. Limpid Limpet? That has a nice ring to it.
