i am praying someone can help me..........
i was using comcast for my internet and moved.
i am staying at my parents and they use charter.
for the love of God, i cannot figure out how to get online.
i have called all kinds of support #'s and no one will help me.
i was plugged directly into their modem....
using a desktop with 8.04 on it. computer came with xp and i switched it over.
PLEASE HELP!!

You will need to give more detail.
See the Wifi help link below (which also applies to wired in many cases).
Important points:
Are you connected by ethernet cable or USB?
Do you get an IP address?
Is the modem a modem-router or a simple modem?

i am using my parents computer to get online and have no problems...it is just my puter that will not recognize.

If that is the case, you need to find drivers for the modem for Ubuntu.
What make / model of modem is it? Can you find the manual online to link to?

that was probably a dumb question because it is probably a zip file.....but i have never had to do this.

If you haven't already, you might try turning off the modem, connecting your computer, and repowering the modem.
