Hello,
Can anyone tell me how to make 3d wallpapers? Like some of the ones here (http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/60-most-execellent-ubuntu-wallpapers/)? Is this a blender thing or can you do it with GIMP as well? Thanks for looking,

hi,

well if you refer just to the 3D-Wallpapers I am afraid that you might get trouble in trying to achieve such results with Gimp. I think it is impossible. But most of these Logos aren't that technically demanding. So try to get a grip on some blender tuts and g ahead. It should not be that complicated.

If you have Wine you could get Bryce and run it through there
Bryce is 3D creation software
outdated versions of it are free off the website
just search Bryce 5.5 download
ive never tried it in wine so im sure it would work but just a suggestion
bryce is easy to use if you can figure it out

Just a heads up that Bryce 5.5 is a bit buggy in Wine. I recommend you learn to use Wings3D www.wings3d.com which works brilliantly in Ubuntu and it will teach you basic polygonal modeling before you start using premixed textures to render boring Bryce "auto" landscapes.

Blender is another good way to get into 3D design in the freeware realm!

Blender would be perfect for some of these designs. When I started with 3D years ago I first learned Maya. Then I looked into open source applications and first tried Wings3D and then Blender. I am totally in love with Blender. It has, like any 3D app, a somewhat steep learning curve but its doable.

You can use a plugin like this http://registry.gimp.org/node/186 for the Gimp to do the more simple logo styles from that link you shared (like emboss/dropshadow etc.).

Hope this helps
