I know there have been a million threads on this, but does anyone know when the PPA maintainers will release 3.5 (NOT the development build Shiretenko)? It's been months. I would just download it from Mozilla's site, but I can't figure out how to install certain plug-ins then. Anybody?

might be too out-of-subject here , but what's different with shiretoko?

Really I would recommend just going with Shiretoko. I know it's supposed to be the unstable nightly build, but it's been stable for me for months now. And once you install it, the firefox command symlinks to shiretoko, so everything works like normal.

edit: @chriskin it's no different from firefox-3.5, other than what's noted above.

Also, official ubuntu builds of firefox-3.5 come standard in Karmic. Ubuntu takes pride in shipping stable releases of software and not changing those during the release cycle. So you'll never see anything but security updates to firefox 3.0 in jaunty.

Kinda off topic but I'm pretty proud that Ubuntu has choosen to use Shiretoko. Doing this promotes open standards which is good for Ubuntu. I'd like to see them continue to do this. Unfortunately there are a few (really not that many) websites that check for Firefox and won't recognize Shiretoko...

(NOT the development build Shiretenko)?

Shiretoko (firefox-3.5 in the repositories) is not a development build. It's the final release of Firefox 3.5. It just doesn't have the Firefox branding. This has been covered many, many times before.

+1

Shiretoko is Firefox 3.5 just branded differently in order to lessen confusion between the default firefox and itself.

To get Shiretoko recognized as Firefox in the userstring, just type about:config in the address bar and then click the top item (general.useragent.extra.firefox) and set the string with the word Firefox in stead of Shiretoko. Leave the version number alone.

October 29, 2009, upon the release of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. That will be the day that Shiretoko becomes Firefox 3.5 as it will then be the default version of Firefox.

Actually, it may already be there in Karmic Alpha 4 since we have already surpassed the Karmic Feature Freeze. Someone running that will have to confirm.
