View Full Version : [ubuntu netbook remix] Viewports would help with small screensize

I am running the ubuntu netbook remix on an Asus with a screen-size of 1024x600. I selected the "Classic Desktop" from System->Preferences->Switch Desktop Mode. After some work with adding backported drivers, everything works very well and I am happy with the look and feel. The one thing that I would like a way to solve is when a screen pops up that is unsizeable and I can not get to the bottom to click the Apply, Cancel and Close buttons (for example). This happened in mysql-admin (adding user locaiton I think) and also flashplayer popped one up under firefox.

When I used to run fvwm, I could shift my viewport to slide down to the bottom of the window but on gnome-metacity, I cannot figure out how to do this, or if it is impossible. Even if I arrange the workspaces vertically in workspace switcher, the don't bleed onto each other. Alternatively, I could slide the window up so the top is off the screen and I could see the bottom to click ocompizcompizn it but I cannot figure out how to do that either. I can side down right or left but not up! It is not something that comes up all the time, but I doubt I am the only one who has been frustrated by the inability to get to the bottom of windows.

I tried using fvwm again but have become too dependent on all of the other goodies that come with gnome, such as network-manager.

If anyone has any ideas or if there is a plan to somehow accomodate this situation that would be great.

Thanks,
Nathan

You can use fvwm as the Gnome window manager. I don't know exactly how to do it (I know it's simple in KDE, and I'd be surprised if it isn't equally simple in Gnome); google can tell you.

I run fvwm on all my computers, including my netbook. I use wicd for the network, and added a wicd-client launcher to my FvwmButtons. I also used to run gnome-panel in fvwm, which got me the Gnome menu and system tray and whatever else I wanted.
