Hi there, I know this might be a simple problem to solve but a newbie to Ubuntu so i'm not 100% sure what i'm supposed to be doing.

Well, basically my first problem is this, I turn on my computer and it runs as normal, however as soon as the desktop screen comes up i just get my shortcuts but none of the bars that are supposed to appear at the top and bottom.
I've spent 5 hours browsing the interent for a solution to this but none that i have tried have worked. everyone else who seems to have this problem seems to have fixed it, but it has not been solved on my computer.

My second problem is this; obviously due to the lack of bars i have had to run the Internet through my desktop by open files in Mozilla then going on from there, however the screen on the interent only takes up about 1/4 of the actual screen, and i have no idea why. Is this just a resolution fault, or is there something more major happening.

Seeing as i have spent hours browsing to no avail I am worried that i will have to completely re-order an Ubuntu CD and reinstall the entire program.
Please can someone help me urgently as I really need my PC at the moment.

Thanks for any help

Did you install anything or did it come out of the bok like this? Have you tried using a older kernel from the GRUB loader?

It pretty much came like that. I updated to the newest version of Ubuntu and it was working fine. I then changed a few settings and all seemed to be good, it ran for about 6 hours in that state with nothing changed, but when i came to turn my cimputer on again all my menu bars had vanished and my interent runs with a small screen.
There is no other options in the GRUB menu except normal and recovery mode.

So yes it may well be my fault, but i don't know what i can do to change it back. . Is it going to be easy or not?
