I discovered this link (http://d0od.blogspot.com/2009/08/new-features-ubuntu-karmic-910.html) in another thread, from it:

Another key feature of UbuntuOne in Karmic will be the option to share data over LAN for limited periods of time.

Does anyone know exactly what this means?

Thanks for bringing this up. There are many great 9.10 features that the blog author included in his post, but, for Ubuntu One, limiting the time that people may share data over the LAN is not one of them. This is false.

So will it be possible to use Ubuntu One internally over a LAN without connecting to or having any files stored remotely on the Ubuntu One servers?

For 9.10, only bookmarks, contacts, and notes will support LAN sync. Files sync over the LAN is in our future plans though.

Excellent news, I look forward to using it. :)
