I just converted my desktop from windows to ubuntu and was wondering if there is a program out for ubuntu similar to Poser for windows. Poser is a 3d modeling program that is only available for windows (to my knowledge). Any help is much appreciated.

3d modelling? Sounds like Blender is the amazing application you're looking for.

http://www.blender.org/

Can't say enough great things about it (be prepared to learn it's user interface though).

It's in the repos too, just sudo apt-get install blender

Oh dear god no, lol. Going from poser to blender would be like jumping from notepad to emacs; both do roughly the same thing, but one is much, much more complex to learn than the other. With blender you have to create each and every object yourself (to the best of my knowelege, at least), it's a completely different type of 3d program than poser or daz3d (which is free to download ...for Mac and Windows. :()

As far as I know, there's nothing that offers models, clothing, textures and props the way that Poser/daz3d does for Linux -Blender doesn't offer what someone who uses poser would be looking for, and would most likely frustrate them.

I agree. I used DAZ Studio 3 under Windows Vista, and got tired of endless reformat and reinstall. I am disabled and it takes a LOT longer than when I was a computer tech. I got Poser 8 for my birthday. Tried to run it under WINE in both Win and Mac, and I try to start it under Wine, and ... nothing happens.

I also use Vue 7 Esprit. I tried to install the Science Fiction module yesterday [it's smaller], and the same thing. I will try Esprit today, because on the forums at Cornucopia 3D, they say Wine will run this version. But, I need Poser. I hate to do a dual-boot just to run Poser!

I haven't even tried to run Pinnacle Studio 12, which I am dying to use [another birthday present from my wonderful sister]. It's for video editing and came with a blanket-like green screen. I want to put myself floating through space and maybe add a space suit. But, I am open to suggestions as to video editing software. I do love the choices of software on Linux, and am fast becoming a fan of Open Office.

You may want to check out MakeHuman (http://www.makehuman.org). Not sure if it does what you want, but i think its the closest to Poser. Although it doesn't have Poser's big library.

It looks promising, but I have only found a 1.0.0. alpha 3b version with most features disabled, is it just me or are there no further development yet?
