Age of empires 2 running rediclously slow

I installed wine, (newest verison) and AOE 2 runs... barely. I used both pirated and legal versions with the same effect. still slow. I know its not the computer specs ,b/c in windows it runs fine. (brand new laptop).
right now I have it running in a virtual desktop, any ideas on making it run playable?

wine bug 421. Consider compiling it with the patches attached and see if it helps.

Also, if you're using an nvidia/ati card, make sure you use proprietary drivers.

Hey! I had a similar problem with another game (it actually ran too fast) and turning off the cpu frequency scaling solved it; put it on a fixed level (eg: 1Ghz), not "on demand" or whatever.
... if that's the case of course :D
