Hi,
I am using an optical cable out of my motherboard for my sound at the speakers. The motherboard uses a reatek chip for sound processing.

I get no sound from my system after just installing Ubuntu a couple of days ago. Is it possible to get sound out through the optical cable using Ubuntu?

Now here is the odd thing. If I play a vob file ripped from one of my dvds with the VLC player I get sound. I have to select the digital out option from the sound menu. I don't get this option when playing other types of video files.

Is there some way to set this up in Ubuntu so that I get sound on the whole system? Like system theme sounds, playing mp3s or other video file formats.

Thank you
