I am starting on a project to convert my DVD collection to video files for playback on either my PC or a MythTV computer (that I have not set up, yet). I have a few questions...

I am using DVD::RIP. What video and audio codecs should I use? I'm not concerned about file size, and I would like to retain as much of the DVD quality as possible, for both sound and audio.

With a couple of "test rips" of a DVD, the audio level is substantially lower vs. an MP3 played on the same PC. In other words, I have to turn the volume up on the movie to get the same level of Audio as for the MP3. Any suggestions on how to get a common audio value between the movies, mp3's, and other audio sources (games?) on my PC?

I am more focused right now on just encoding the DVD's. Looking ahead to using these in conjunction with the MythTV PC, are there other things that I should think about doing now...easier to do now as part of the ripping process vs. later?

Thanks!

If you not concerned about file size, maybe think about keeping your vids as .vobs? No quality loss at all :)

That would be an option, but DVD::RIP by default records a DVD to multiple VOB files. I would prefer to end up with one file. I don't see an option for changing the DVD::RIP behavior.

Personally, I dont see the issue. You were going to end up with the .vobs ripped to individual .avi (or whatever), so wheres the problem with having the same number of .vobs?

I *think* Vobcopy will rip to a single .vob though, if that is what your after.
