Laptop has no sound

I just bought a laptop, played around with the Vista it came with a little(it had sound then) then I wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Everything works except for the sound now. I've googled the problem but I haven't had much success with applying the methods suggested to other people, they either don't apply to me or I need a little more direct help.
