I am setting up an Ubuntu server at my wife's school this weekend (hopefully).
She has 2 Brother Laser Printers with Ethernet and USB ports (I plan on hooking the printers up to the network through the router), and 9 iMac G4 Flat Panel computers that the students will use for filmmaking with Final Cut Express ( I plan on hooking up the iMacs to the switch, which in turn will be hooked up to the router).
I have a router, an Linksys NAS storage box for 1.5 TB storage, and a 24 port switch.
First, I want to allow the students to only: (1) print OpenOffice documents to the 2 laser printers; and (2) to access their own respective dedicated folder on the NAS storage box for storing their work. I do not want to provide the students internet access, as we had done that last year, and got in trouble with P2P file sharing and pornography. Never mind the legality or morality, THE PARENTS!!!!!!
Second, I want to allow the teacher to access the web, the printers and the students' folders and files (to review their work, provide feedback, and leave assignments).
I want to make sure that the students log in with their own UN and PW so that they can access their server's folder, but no other students' folders.
Can someone provide me guidance for this task in terms of what packages I should install when installing Ubuntu Server? Also, should I use 8.04 LTS or 9.04 at this point? Note that I aim to have internet access solely for the server and the teacher.
