Hi I'm really new to Ubuntu/Linux/etc and I've been having trouble for days with trying to get the drivers for my graphics card to work. After 4 reinstalls here I am :S

but anyway:

I asked for advice in another forum and they told me to use this PPA to upgrade my drivers
https://launchpad.net/~nvidia-vdpau/+archive/ppa (https://launchpad.net/%7Envidia-vdpau/+archive/ppa)

So I did that but then my xorg.conf file spews out these errors:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log:148:(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:149:(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please check your system's kernel log for additional error
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:150:(EE) NVIDIA(0): messages and refer to Chapter 8: Common Problems in the
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:151:(EE) NVIDIA(0): README for additional information.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:152:(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:156:(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
/var/log/Xorg.1.log:1631:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
/var/log/Xorg.failsafe.log:1631:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)Also here is my nvidia bug report if that also helps.

Please help I'm totally new to this OS and I'm going insane trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

..it seems as you are not running nvidia driver..please post output of:

grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and:

lsmod | grep nvidia

...you downloaded some driver and installed it by:

sudo sh Nvidia-your-driver.run ?

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 12:50 PM
Nope I just downloaded the drivers from the PPA's I mentioned in the first post and activated them through synaptic/ System->administration -> hardware drivers.

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 01:08 PM
...get rid of that driver.Uncheck it in restricted drivers, reboot.
Download this one (assuming you are on 32 bit):

http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/185.18.31/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.31-pkg1.run

save it to Desktop.
Log out,press: Ctrl+Alt+F3
Log in,type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Go to Desktop.

cd Desktop

type:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.31-pkg1.run

(just need to type "sudo sh N" and press TAB)

If asked,say "yes"

sudo reboot now

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 01:26 PM
Alright done. What now?

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 01:33 PM
Now there should be the new driver working...
Does it not?

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 01:40 PM
It doesn't seem to be working. Like I'll go to system->preferences->display and it will tell me this:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

Which i remember getting before.

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 01:44 PM
type:

gksudo nvidia-settings

to see if nvidia-settings also complains about driver not in use.
If not installed:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

Please post your whole xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 01:49 PM
nvidia settings also complained about the driver

here is my xorg.conf file

No.
Assuming you still have the downloaded driver on the Desktop, reinstall it:

Log out,press: Ctrl+Alt+F3
Log in,type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Go to Desktop.

cd Desktop

type:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.31-pkg1.run --uninstall

reboot.Then:

Log out,press: Ctrl+Alt+F3
Log in,type:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Go to Desktop.

cd Desktop

type:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.31-pkg1.run

"YES" to ALL questions, even the one belonging to set up your xorg.conf

sudo reboot

I ran into an error when I was installing the file that said:

unable to open /usr/ib/nvidia/libglx.so.xserver-xorg-core for reading(no file or directory)

I then pressed ok a few times when it came up and it went away and the file installed.

Upon rebooting I got the following error message:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log:140:(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 06:20 PM
No idea anymore.Something seems to be really messed up due to several nvidia installation attempts.Your error message suggests to have a look at:

/var/log/kern.log

post it...

PPA is only the repository for personel packages.Should not disturb itself.
If kernel log offers no solution,I suggest to set up ubuntu completely new, update the system completely and download the nvidiadriver again..
it should not complain about:
unable to open /usr/lib/nvidia/libglx.so.xserver

sorry.

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 07:02 PM
The most important thing is to update your system to get the latest kernel.
Fetch the updates with synaptic, hit apply.
You have to restart if updating the kernel.Do it
until synaptic shows you that there are no updates left..
Then download that nvidiadriver, log out and install it manually.
You did it twice, should know how to do...

..and let me know ..

daes_coconut

Boot your oldest kernel, install driver again...!

Problem is,what you noticed for shure, that it complains:

Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.

We formerly tested the bus:

Bus Location: 01.00.0

what seems to be correct. In chapter 8 of nvidia's README,as suggested,
I cannot find anything about this particular issue.

If testing older kernel fails, test 8.10....that should work for shure.
Installation seems running fast on your machine... ;-)

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 08:52 PM
Here's more information about my machine if it at all helps:

Toshiba Qosmio X300
Nvidia 9800M GTX
Duo Core 2.66
2 x 320 GB HDD's (ubuntu is installed on the second, windows 7 on the first)

Also I posted on another forum previously about the problem and someone just posted again but this time they suggest changing kernal parameters?
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=137609

But alright I'll boot to the older kernal and install again.

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 09:06 PM
Ok so:

I went to the oldest kernal installed the driver on there, booted into the newest kernal, it brought up errors saying there was no driver for this kernal and then rebooted and went into the oldest kernal and it gave me the same errors.

So I assume now I should install ubuntu 8.10??

Oh god I'm starting to hate this OS @_@

realzippy
August 20th, 2009, 09:17 PM
you have seen this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1071447

Ubuntu 8.10 x64
2.6.27.-9-generic kernel

Ok fresh install of 8.10 32 bit

upgraded everything
rebooted
installed 177 driver
rebooted

got error:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log:1651:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
/var/log/Xorg.failsafe.log:1651:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

This is the kernal:
2.6.27-14-generic

Oh god it's never ending haha

Try
Alberto Milone's envy script..
Open terminal

sudo apt-get install envyng-core

uninstall nvidia-driver.reboot,

log out,ctrlaltF3,:

sudo envyng -t

...assume you checked xorg.conf for proper settings,e.g device section driver=nvidia

daes_coconut
August 20th, 2009, 11:27 PM
Installed the 177 driver with envyng and got this again:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log:1651:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
/var/log/Xorg.failsafe.log:1651:(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

Should I be installing the 2.6.27-9-generic kernal

(using 2.6.27-14-generic atm)

which you suggested earlier?
