Inkscape won't change stroke style!

Occasionally (and it only happens occasionally) Inkscape will stop letting me set stroke width, style, join, cap or anything on the third tab. Making changes has no effect. And new style will apparently be set for all items, even though the status bar disagrees. So somewhere it's not updating the fields, and it's getting out of sync. Restarting Inkscape solves the problem. But this is not a solution...

Is this a bug? Or am I missing something?
