I am attempting to run a Settlers of Catan clone called Pioneers on AMD64 Jaunty. With some terminal work I was able to get computer players into the game, but I am encountering two large errors.
1. After creating the server, I am unable to personally join it. The only entries in the 'players connected' list are the computer players that I put in.
2. When I hit 'launch client' the window appears and then instantly dies. The game will run itself just fine if I connect to the server with the full number of computer players (notifications of progress of the game appear in the terminal), but I cannot get the GUI to come up for more than a split second.
I would greatly appreciate either help on these problems or perhaps a link to a more functional settlers of catan clone because I really want to play it. Thanks!

I only know of 2 versions for linux (which are the only versions of this boardgame I know of). I think you picked the better one, even though the other one looks better (3d).
I tried to do the same as you and failed.
It seems that the version in the repositories is... no it cannot be bad, I played pioneers on 1 laptop this summer, 1 server, 3 clients. It worked! But now it doesn't. There also seems to be something funny about adding computer opponents.

What I did to add computer players was open a terminal and enter (I am not sure how to do the quote code thing, please forgive me)
code: pioneersai -s 127.0.0.1 -n "Peter"
This puts a computer in the local game.

someone should make propre graphics/skin for this game... the color noise is too much for my eyes... simple yellow/brown/gray etc would be better

I have the same problem if I click "launch client" from the server. But if I run the client separatley from the menu or by typing "pioneers" in a terminal I can join my server by putting in the IP address 127.0.0.1 I hope that helps.

Just posted a how to that might be of interest http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1359342
==> If alternate packages work out of the box, no terminal required, please let me know

Since you're having problems with the unlicensed clone of Settlers of Catan, why not try the real thing? You can play the base Settlers of Catan game for free as much as you like with real people at www.playcatan.com (http://www.playcatan.com). There is also a game you can purchase with artificial intelligences designed by the game creator, Klaus Teuber, himself. Why "settle" for the second-rate version when you can have the real thing?

Why "settle" for the second-rate version when you can have the real thing? That version is nice, I played the free beginners version--the AI can initiate a trade, which is great. For someone wishing to learn the rules, playing a 1P game, it is a good option.
==> Of course, the best option is to purchase the actual board game, and enjoy face to face time with friends. (& beverages) :)
However, "pioneers" remains good as a free way to have multiplayer games, or for 1P games with more than 2 players. Also, it runs faster on my computer, has a more efficient interface for building (IMO). I often wish the trading interface could be displayed/organized/customized better, and of course I wish the AI could initiate trades.
Thanks for the link; I'll point to your post from my how-to
