very rarely i get an email that tells me they attached some thing and in the bottom of thunderbird i see a winmail.dat but can not open it i have added tnef stuff but i never could get this thing to work, what do i do i need the attachment unless that is not the attachment and something unknown to me.

This is related to people using Microsoft's Outlook, which defaults to sending mail attachments in it's own proprietary system instead of sing normal attachments.

The best solution is to simply ask for the sender to configure their mail client to use normal attachments, although there are some programs available that allow opening these attachments.

Thanks, i found a post finally about lookout add on for thunderbird and it works, what a pain i have been ignoring winmail.dats for years, never finding an answer.
