I am trying to tweak a few things on a friend's ancient computer. It is a Packard Bell 2100. The PC's bios has an admin password which without, you can only view the bios. You must be admin to make any changes. The friend does not know what a bios is much less the password. I googled and read that "bell9" was a default admin password but it did not work. Is there anyway to view or change the admin bios password? Without it I can't even change the boot order. Currently, the boot sequence is floppy then HD. I am trying to get it to boot from a CD.

Remove the clock battery and leave it sit over night. Put it back in when you wake up and all the CMOS will be cleared 'Bios Reset'. Either that you punch random stuff up before the password diolog comes up and eventually you might hit the bypass combo. At least the random thing works on Gateway comps.

i think the ultimate boot cd has a tool to reset the bios password, or to crack it something like that. i am not sure but you can look into it

It's just a shame he can't get boot order done to use that CD. ;)

hey look, I'm useful around here after all! It may not pertain to Ubuntu issues, but at least I can help with Hardware related!

I removed the battery last night and replaced it today. Password gone. Problem solved!

However, the bios does not recognize the cd drive. Again this is an old PB2100. Someone has replaced the original cd-rom with a newer one at some point. I tried to get the bios to autodetect it but had no luck. The cd-rom does work in Windows (again not my pc). So, is there a problem with the bios or is this due to proprietary issues with using a non-Packard Bell cd-rom in a Packard Bell PC?
