Update from 05/01/2010 :

Mystery of Solarus DX – Zelda Remake ! :
http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com/mystery-of-solarus-dx-zelda-remake/

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to inform UbuntuForums visitors that I will no longer going to “popup” the LGN thread with updates (IF I’ll make the updates they will be only on the first post of the thread), I will however going to replay to questions/interesting posts.
So if you don’t see the LGN thread on the front page, it doesn’t mean the blog wasn’t updated.

You can bookmark LGN : http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com
Or follow it with RSS feeder : http://feeds.feedburner.com/LinuxGamingNews

It's not fair that only LGN will have it's own thread at UF and all other wonderful Linux Gaming related websites don't - and if they would then it will spam the board ;) .

MaximB, Added your blog to my google ig page. Also saw you chatting in #LGP about a future article. Keep up the good work.

Site updated with an article AND an interview (but those who follow my threads at Ubuntuforums might be disappointed as it's not so new).
But I count that you already forgotten about this so it will be new for you ;)

Interviews : http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com/?page_id=16

I indeed sent some questions to Michael from LGP - so once he answer them I'll put them there ;)
I warn you that it might take some time - my questions are difficult ;)

P.S

I kinda new to wordpress and I have some minor difficulties to do what I want - if you are an expert and think you could help, P.M me or send me an email.

Thanks.

Just a note "In this page I will post only interviews I personally done."

Should be "On this page I will post only interviews I have personally done."

Just reads better ;)

Also it seems they asked you a question "Interesting. Which sites are those? Would you like us to add you to our
press information list?" to which it seems you didn't respond? Edit -> Nevermind you answered it much later :D

Btw, when you do mention a Free game, let me know, and I'll link you.

Feegamer is already on my links ;)
And don't worry - IF the game is FREE software I will let the readers know about it as I think it's very important.
I already have an idea for an article about such game/software/tools ...

Only thing i would suggest is that page should have links to each individual interview you do, and that you should make the spacing a bit better, it's all clumped together atm.

Will do.

As I have only 1 interview I left it like this , but it will change once I have more (and more are indeed on the way...)

Also at this note I want to inform you that in the next few days I will move to another domain which will benefit the blog in a way that a wiki will be added and even maybe even forums later on...
I don't have the domain name yet but it will be hosted at : linux-hardcore.com

I have several names I can use :

1. linux-gaming-news.linux-hardcore.com
2. lgn.linux-hardcore.com
3. games.linux-hardcore.com
or any other gaming related name ...

I am open to suggestions...

All efforts should have a worthy start.

Hive Rise comes to mind, Id love to see a full spread on the game, and even a review. If such a review existed, Im certain the UGA team would link back to you for it.

I already linked to UGA from my blog.

Hello people !

I am happy to inform you that this blog is moved to new servers under the Linux-Hardcore domain !

Why ?
About a day ago my old friend Rich from Linux-Hardcore watched my new gaming blog – he was so exited that he asked offered me to host this blog at his domain.

Why it’s good for you ?
Under the new domain a wiki could (and will) be added.
Under the new domain the Linux-Hardcore Gaming forums are available
The WordPress (the software that I use for my blog) is much more customizable now, and I have much more themes, space and control over the blog.

My NEW Blog By the very same name “Linux Gaming News” is now located here :

http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com

LGN Stands for Linux Gaming News, I could off course right it all – but I suspect this will be too much ;)

Also i voted on your poll, i dislike the theme.

A few people also voted they dislike the theme - and I have a no idea why.
What theme you think will be better ? (I have a HUGE collection to choose from), what colors do you think will suite it ?

As much as I love dark themes I don't think they good for my blog ...
The Blue theme from my old blog I cannot find.

What do you suggest ?

ELD
August 18th, 2009, 08:13 AM
Well for me it makes the articles harder to read when the whole site is dark, i would go for a simple and light theme.

Just a peice of friendly advice i think you should work on your grammer things like this:

"How are the sells went?"

Doesn't make too much sense, i know what you mean but it's not correct, if you really want your site to be taken seriously maybe think of someone to read it over before you post it.

That's just how I wrote my original mail to him, he also didn't understand it right and therefore I asked him this question in a different manner which explained afterwords.

I think the screenshots are not as important as the tools, you could take those tools and use them for your own RPG game.

Eh, added a tab maxim, updated page.

Both sets of screenshots now.

I hope you understand the reason why I didn't include the screenshot for version 0.4 on my blog.
Version 0.3 doesn't represent the current status and my attention was not on the game, but on the tools.

You see, people seems to judge from first sigh, and the screenshot from version 0.4 could harm people's opinion about the game while the tools are good and useful in other projects.

Thats a rather shallow view of the generalized gaming opinion by the populace as a whole. Not all gamers are 13 to 26 year olds, but to each his own for certain.

Thanks although I don't see how my or any GNU/Linux gaming website is related to this app : http://en.djl-linux.org/?q=node/17

"Djl is an open-source (GPL licensed) game manager written in Python 2.5 for the GNU/Linux Operating Systems. It is inspired by Valve's Steam software for Windows."

It is inspired by Valve's Steam software for Windows, but instead of having Windows games it has linux games that can be installed on any GNU/Linux Distro with ease(hope that clarifies things :)).
It is related to your blog and others, because it has in its repository demos for linux commercial games and full open-source and freeware linux games.
Descriptions can be deceiving :P.

Keep up the great work. I think you can make it better by adding a review section. There aren't many Linux only review web pages. I just bought shadowlans and could not find any reviews for it. I ended up reading a review for it for windows. I know thats quite a bit of work but I'm sure we can get people to help you review the games. Even I can help but writting was never my strong point. I am enjoying shadowgrounds very much.

Actually there are already a few sites that review Linux games, that what I was trying to avoid in my blog, until the Mystic Mines developer contacted me asking to review his game (and at that time there was already a few reviews of mystic mines), luckily my interview with him lead to surprising results (Linux users tend to buy more them Windows and Mac users, specially considering there market share).

Anyways, I thought again about reviewing more games, I bought Shadowgrounds and enjoyed it very much up to the second mission - then it crashed my PC.
It was my ATI Radeon's 4870HD fault so today I've ordered a new Nvidia videocard, hopefully next week it will arrive and I could try again the SG series and all my PC problems will be solved.

A review is a matter of opinion, some review prise games that many people don't like, others bash A++ games for good reasons.

The AoD developer Vince reviewed Oblivion and Fallout3, while I enjoyed Oblivion he bashed it hard, he had very good explanations on the subject (being in the cRPG world for that long) and I tend to agree with him, but I still enjoyed the game - at the time.

If you read my Mystic Mines review you have seen that there was some dark points in the game, the developer agreed with me about them.

Anyways, all of the proprietary games that were ported to Linux were also available on Windows and Mac, so the reviews where already done long time ago - and it's the same game, so giving my perspective of the game will give you another opinion - but it doesn't mean that what I write is what you will feel when you play the game.

I thought about reviewing Prey which imo is a brilliant game, but there are already dozens of reviews and the Linux version is no different.

So in one hand I try to put things on my blog that are new and on the other hand those reviews were already been made.

I can see your point, sorry about your crash with Shadowgrounds, been running like a champ here but Im on a 9800 GTS Nvidia card here. I did read your review on Mystic Mines and I tought you did an excellent job. I meant you could just review Linux actual native games and stay away from the PC games runing under Cedega/Wine. All the games you describe on your blog about are going to hopefully have a native client, you could review the native client games. I been impress with LGP, both games I have bought installed without a single glitch, I bought jetsnguns and shadowgrounds. Just keep doing the great work you are doing, I check your blog daily to see whats in store for the future for us.

I never intended and won't review Windows games that run on Wine but without a NATIVE GNU/Linux client.

Thanks for your interest in my blog, meanwhile here's another update :

Do you have any plans to discuss, or devote a section to windows games that run flawlessly through wine? I know you stated earlier you have no plans to review them, and that is perfectly fine. My opinion, is that linux native is the first choice, but if that fails, a game that runs flawlessly through wine is fine by me. So, for example, WoW will run without a hitch through wine, if any linux gamer is looking for an MMO, WoW is worth mentioning. But a game like, say oblivion may not run so well, making the experience not worth it for me. The wineHQ forums can be difficult when navigating to determine if the game will run well or not, another voice that could let us know would be welcome.
In addition, while it is fashionable to bash game companies for not releasing linux ports, I think we should praise companies like blizzard that at least take the time to work with the wine community to ensure compatability even if they dont directly offer support.

Hello Naegling23, sorry for not replying earlier - I must have missed your replay.

I do not plan to review, write or devote a section to Windows games that run 100% on wine.
One of the reasons for that is that I do not buy Windows games that don't have a native Linux client, thus I can't write about games that I never played from my perspective.
Also I do not want to encourage GNU/Linux gamers to support such companies who do not bother making a native GNU/Linux clients for their games.

I do know about companies that make sure their games run on Wine, but for me it's not enough - it doesn't serve our goals as GNU/Linux gamers.
If we want more native games to be made we do not need to support Windows games, even if they happen to run on Wine.

On other note :
I've updated my blog.
The Ubuntuforums readers might be familiar with today's topic of my blog which is making the developers of Torchlight release a native GNU/Linux client.
Read more about it here : http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com/vote-for-torchlight-gnulinux-port/

Enjoy

Why not just buy a PS3

The CPU on that thing is incredibly powerful and will allow the ps3 to do things Pc's cannot do, and will not do for a long time yet. Thats just one example, PC's get better every day yes, but like i said before their not 'dedicated gaming machines' and in terms of processor power consoles are gonna win all day, your going to have to keep upgrading your Pc to play all the latest games.

I hope you are not trolling...
It's a GNU/Linux forum, Ubuntu more specifically - I hope it tells you something.
Other then that PS3 is expensive and each game costs much more then it's PC variation.
Please don't talk about consoles in this thread, unless it's somehow related to GNU/Linux.

Thanks.
Sorry for not posting more, but for some strange reason I was loaded with work for the past 2 weeks.
Sometimes Linux/Windows System administrators actually do stuff to get payed ;)
But I hope that soon I'll be back to the regular regime of doing nothing, show my face and get payed :D

Also, I see that there are many people who read my blog, but almost none replies to my posts - so I'm not sure what people want to read, what they like or dislike...

Your comments are valuable !

As you can probably notice I’ve been very busy with my job as a GNU/Linux and Windows System Administrator in the past month and I didn’t have much time to update my blog.
But this is hopefully about to change now…

I’ve noticed that many people where interested in Dark Salvation from Mangled Eye Studios, so I’ve managed to to interview Thearrel McKinney – the founder and main (and almost only) developer of the game.

Well a bit sad he gave no time frame when it will be out, and he is only working part time on the Linux port for Dark salvation. What can you do, you need to do what will pay the bills I reckon. Great work on getting the interview. Only thing I will add if we pre-order but a lot of linux users are not wanting to pre-order due to the UT saga.

UT is very different from id tech 3, id tech 3 is GPLed so no licensing issues here.
It's just a matter of time.

And the pre-orders are only for the CD versions, so he could know how much hard copies to make (they cost money you know ;)), there is no need to pre-order the download version - they will be released regardless.

Excellent job Max, I didn't realize all of these developments were going on. Thank you. By the way - I also voted that I didn't like the theme. But, I love the content ;)

I think the theme is too cluttered. There is almost no space between the various elements of the page and worst of all (for me), you don't use paragraphs. I find it difficult to read because of this. But, I know English isn't your first language so well done on a great job. Here's an example of a site that I really enjoyed reading, because the layout was good. http://www.wholefoodmatters.com/

Best of luck to you and thank you for the good work you're doing.

Hello everyone and welcome to my last "popup-update".

I've summarized all the states from the day LGN was "born" to 03/01/2010.
It's a very long thread that some of you might find interesting.

http://lgn.linux-hardcore.com/welcome-to-2010/

If you want to keep this thread active (and me updating it at the front page), discuss about LGN, games, developers, porters, etc... here and keep this thread interesting.

Thank you again for visiting LGN !

@jarlath :
As you've said , the content - that what counts.
I've played with different themes in the first days of the blog, and I can't find a theme that everyone would like, it's all about taste.
I like the current theme, and by the poll I've made, it seems acceptable by most people.
If you find many more people that want the theme to be changed and propose a different theme - I'll think about it.

Thank you for sharing.
