Is this advisable? I am OK doing a complete rewrtie of the hard drive having saved my needed data to thumb drives. Is there any reason not to image the Dell Ubuntu 9.04 upgrade ISO and just install it on the 1505n Inspiron Laptop that came loaded with Fiesty?

Well if you are going to essentially erase your complete hard drive, you are now left with a "virgin drive", so a complete install of 9.04 should be OK. Perhaps some of the LInux gurus here might have something to say about using gpartid, the partitioner software. Does it completely blank out the disk (I would think so) so that any remaining data bits do not influence the new install data.
What I would be concerned about is that the installation procedure would see the older Ubuntu and re-use the partitions leaving some of the data and programs intact and pointers to that data/programs. As I said above, maybe some of the Linux experts could chime in here.
